Information about the Local Area

There is much to see and do in the area. The immediate local area is very popular for all sorts of outdoor activities including walking, climbing and kayaking, with the local NTS centre within walking distance of the cottage. For those that enjoy munro bagging, the Glenshiel area has 21 Munros all of which are within easy reach of the cottage.

Famous landmarks in Lochalsh include Eilean Donan Castle at Dornie, made famous by films such as Highlander, and also the Five Sisters of Kintail. Nearby villages include Inverinate, Shiel Bridge, and Dornie, and the Isle of Skye is less than a 20 minute drive from the cottage.

Wildlife

a spectacular red deer (a stag) which can often be seen from the cottageBirds often found around the Croe Saltmarsh and Loch Duich include (depending upon season): Greylag Goose, Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Red-breasted Merganser, Goosander, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Oystercatcher, Curlew, Common sandpiper, Greenshank, Redshank, Mew (Common) Gull, Herring Gull & Buzzard.

Those that are occasionally sighted include: Mute Swan, Whooper Swan, Pink-footed Goose, Common Eider, Red-throated Diver, Shag, Little Grebe, Ringed Plover, Golden Plover, Dunlin, Snipe, Turnstone, Black-headed Gull, Iceland Gull, Glaucous Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Guillemot, Razorbill, Little Auk, White-tailed Sea Eagle, Sparrowhawk, Golden Eagle (above 1,500 ft usually), Kestrel, Merlin, and Peregrine,
