Information about the Local Area – Inverinate and Glenshiel
There is much to see and do in the area. The immediate local area is very popular for all sorts of outdoor activities including walking, climbing and kayaking, with the local NTS centre within walking distance of the cottage. For those that enjoy munro bagging, the Glenshiel area has 21 Munros all of which are within easy reach of the cottage.
Famous landmarks in Lochalsh include Eilean Donan Castle at Dornie, made famous by films such as Highlander, and also the Five Sisters of Kintail. Nearby villages include Inverinate, Shiel Bridge, and Dornie, and the Isle of Skye is less than a 20 minute drive from the cottage.
Wildlife
Those that are occasionally sighted include: Mute Swan, Whooper Swan, Pink-footed Goose, Common Eider, Red-throated Diver, Shag, Little Grebe, Ringed Plover, Golden Plover, Dunlin, Snipe, Turnstone, Black-headed Gull, Iceland Gull, Glaucous Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Guillemot, Razorbill, Little Auk, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Merlin, and Peregrine,Birds often found around the Croe Saltmarsh and Loch Duich include (depending upon season): Greylag Goose, Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Red-breasted Merganser, Goosander, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Oystercatcher, Curlew, Common sandpiper, Greenshank, Redshank, Mew (Common) Gull, Herring Gull & Buzzard.
In addition to the fantastic bird life you may also be able to spot deer, otters, seals, porpoises and dolphins.
Outdoor Activities
There is a huge range of outdoor activities catered for in the local area. Glenshiel has 21 munros making the location ideal for walking enthusiasts as well as those looking for a more gentle stroll. Other activities include:
- Pony trekking either at the Glenshiel Highland Pony Trekking Centre, Shiel Bridge or with the Highland Carriage Company at Ratagan
- NTS Kintail
The cottage is also in an ideal location for anyone wanting to spend their holiday canoeing or kayaking.

Great local seafood is available at Buth Bheag in Kyle of Lochalsh and the Railway Seaffod Restaurant also in Kyle of Localsh. There is also Beth’s Cafe at Balmacara which is daytime only.
There are also places to eat in Dornie, and further a field in Plockton and Kyle of Lochalsh.
